Crater Lake
Today's picture features beautiful Crater Lake in south-central Oregon. 7,000 years ago the eruption and collapse of Mt. Mazama created an
unbelievable six mile wide crater. This gigantic caldera at the top of the
volcanic mountain subsequently filled up with water, creating Crater Lake.
Crater Lake is quite simply one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the
entire world. The brilliant blue water reflects the green forest of the
surrounding peaks, offering a spectacular view from the lake's rim like no
other.
Crater Lake National Park, established in 1902, is the nation's 5th oldest
national park. It is also one of America's most visited parks.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stay at historic Crater Lake Lodge or rough it and
camp at some of the country's highest camp sites. Summer-time activities include
Crater Lake boat tours and hiking. Winter-time visitors can participate in cross-country skiing and weekend snowshoe
hikes, made possible by typical snowfall amounts of incredible proportions.
Crater Lake National Park offers a wonderful and exciting vacation experience
for everyone, at any time of the year.
