Cows Cooling Off In The Creek

Cows cooling off in the creek.

As usual, it appears that summer arrived right along with Memorial Day, and yesterday's sweltering 91 degrees F is now the new record high for May 30. After having such a wet and cool spring, most people in southwestern Virginia were seeking refuge from the intense heat and sun, and as today's picture shows our animal friends were doing the same!

Although the daytime temperature in our part of the world can approach 100 degrees on a scorching summer day, the water in our creeks and rivers remains moderately cool - so you're likely to see cows, pigs and other animals enjoying a refreshing dip from time to time. I found these cows wading in the creek just a short distance from my home as I was driving by.

Most farm animals live their short lives without the luxury of air conditioning, so they make do the best they can. And as any kid can tell you, wading in a nice, cool creek can do wonders on a sultry day!
