Our "Bushy" Birdhouse

Our "Bushy" Birdhouse

Back in the spring, I decided to cut down one of the smallest of the trees that line the edges of our long field because it was too close to one of the large ones. But rather than cut it off close to the ground, I left an 8 foot stump and fastened a birdhouse onto the top of it. I figured the stump would die and we would be left with a "post" holding a birdhouse.

Well, that stump refused to die! It simply sprouted a host of new branches that make the birdhouse appear to be sitting inside a bush! At first I planned to cut off the new branches and keep cutting off their replacements until the stump finally gave up and died, but the more I looked at it the more I liked having the branches "frame" the birdhouse.

I suppose that species of tree must be an especially hardy one, and if it has that strong a will to live I think I'll just leave it alone. Who knows, by this time next year that birdhouse just might be completely hidden behind a thick veil of branches and leaves - and that will be just fine with me and my feathered friends!
