ASP Web Hosting Explained

What ASP web hosting is and how to tell if you need it

ASP web hosting refers to web hosting companies that provide support for Active Server Pages (ASP). If you need a dynamic, database-driven website you might wish to embed ASP code into your website’s HTML Pages.

When a visitor is viewing a website that is developed using ASP, the pages often change depending on the actions of the user. ASP code allows you to link your web pages to a database. Your visitors can then interact with the page by logging in and using their own personal settings or they can interactively place orders on your website.

What is ASP?

ASP stands for Active Server Pages. Active Server Pages are HTML pages with embedded ASP scripts that are processed by the server before the page is delivered to the user.

ASP allows you to create powerful, dynamic database-driven pages where a user can access data in the database and interact with page objects such as Java components or Active X controls.

How does ASP work?

When you type a URL into the address bar or click on a link, you're asking the web server to send a file to your PC. If the file consists of standard HTML, your web browser receives the page and displays it precisely the same as it exists on the web server.

But if an ASP file is sent to your computer from the web server, the server will run the HTML code first, and then run the ASP script code. For example, the ASP code could display the current date, time, or other useful information.

How to find a good ASP web hosting company

You should look for a hosting provider who will host your website on a MS Windows 2000 web server. It is much safer to host your ASP pages on a Microsoft server because they are more stable and most ASP components work seamlessly with Internet Information Services (IIS), which is specific to Windows.

You also need to consider whether your web site uses a database (e.g. SQL, Access), and then make sure your web hosting plan includes support for the type of database your web site uses.
