An Abandoned House In Washington County, VA
Yesterday afternoon my wife and I decided to take my
mom to one of her
favorite restaurants in Chilhowie, Va for an after-church lunch. God had blessed
us with yet another beautiful late autumn day so we skipped the main roads and
took a Sunday drive to Chilhowie via "the back way".
As we were driving down a narrow country road, we rounded a curve and came upon
some cows taking a rest in what was once the yard of an old abandoned house.
They looked like they had just finished a wonderful Sunday afternoon meal of
their own and now it was time for siesta...like us, they were relaxing on a lazy
Sunday afternoon!
That old house is probably a lot like countless others scattered all across the
heartland of America. Most likely families were raised, dreams came true and
heartaches were endured in that old house standing alongside a narrow country
road in rural Washington County, Virginia - or perhaps none of that took place -
who knows?
I don't know anything at all about the people who have lived in that old house
over the years. They might have been successful in life, eventually moving on up
to bigger and better things...or perhaps they weren't very successful at all.
Such is the mystery that shrouds abandoned houses all across the country. But what
we do know about this particular abandoned house is that its lawn is apparently
a popular resting place for a few weary cows.
