A+ Certification For PC Technicians

A+ Certification is essential for Computer Technicians who wish to succeed in today's competitive technology field. The widespread availability of PC Tech courses in Community Colleges and elsewhere has created a large number of qualified PC Technicians competing for a limited number of positions. A+ Certification is the key to setting yourself apart from the rest of the crowd.

To qualify for A+ Certification, it's necessary to pass two moderately difficult exams:
  • A+ Certification Core Hardware Exam - The A+ Core Hardware exam measures your competence level as compared to a desktop computer hardware service technician with six months of on-the-job experience.

In order to pass the A+ Core exam, you must demonstrate a basic knowledge of installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting, and repairing desktop PC systems at the standard defined by the current test specification.

  • A+ Certification OS Technologies Exam - The A+ Operating System exam measures your competence level with operating system issues for a desktop computer hardware service technician with six months of on-the-job experience.

In order to pass the A+ OS exam, you must demonstrate a basic knowledge of Command Line Prompt, Windows 9x and Windows 2000 for installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting, and repairing desktop computer systems.
The Comptia website has a comprehensive breakdown of the specific objectives covered on the A+ exams as well as the instructions for scheduling your tests.

It's very difficult to pass the exams without preparing with a good test preparation guide. The one that I used and highly recommend is the A+ Certification All-In-One Guide  by Michael Meyers. Of course, there are several other good A+ study guides available. Do a bit of research and select the one that best matches your study habits.

Be prepared to study the materials thoroughly. You need to understand the concepts behind the questions, not just the answers provided. Answer the review questions and take the practice exams.

If you apply yourself, pass the exams, and become an A+ Certified Computer Technician, you can compete very well for the top tech jobs and demand the highest salary available.
